The split, supplied ever-so-generously by the smashing Old Press Records, covers 6.5 million square miles of math rock turf, from the US to Canada to Japan. Abelia’s ‘Bee Cave’ brings tapped-out math rock mayhem with intermingling pop textures, forging a track that moves from calm to hyperactive. The use of looping and pedal-stomping tricks in this track is astounding. Fathom Crux follows with ‘Riposte’, which sees the band putting their mathematical dabblings to the wayside in favour of an upbeat instrumental jam session. Tokyo-based Fulusu offers an piano-led post rock piece with ‘Maze’, offering complex jazz reminiscent of mouse on the keys and jizue. Finally, Trying Science closes the split with ‘The Ghost of Steve Jobs’, an uplifting, straight-up-the-middle and undoubtedly flawless math rock instrumental. In all, this is a great little split from four fine bands heading towards bigger stages and many more ears.
